EBikes at Open Shop

At Bike Walk Tompkins open shop every Tuesday 3pm to 7pm you can:

  • get advice on purchasing an ebike and test drive an ebike

  • get one-on-one assistance helping you repair your ebike

  • learn how to install an ebike motor on a bike you like

Thinking about buying an Ebike?

The more you learn about ebikes the more sense they make as a great way to get around Ithaca. Your first impulse may be to go online and buy the cheapest ebike you can find. Resist that impulse. Instead, stop by BWT’s open shop and learn what styles of ebike will work for you, what kinds of ebikes can make it up Ithaca’s long steep hills without overheating, and why most ebikes are difficult to repair. Then try out some of the demo ebikes we have at the shop. We can help you make an informed decision before you buy.

Need Help Repairing Your Ebike?

If you purchased an ebike online, you may find it difficult to hire a bike mechanic willing to work on your ebike. Fear not, in most cases you can do the repairs yourself with the help of Bike Walk Tompkins’ volunteer mechanics. Just stop by Tuesdays between 3pm and 7pm.

Need Help installing an ebike motor on a bike you like?

The most capable and least expensive ebike motors are only available as kits that you install on a regular bike. The installation takes moderate mechanical skills, around $600 dollars and a few hours. If this sounds like something you’d like to try, we’ll help you order the parts you’ll need and we’ll guide you through the installation process free of charge.
