The Blueprint for Better Bicycling will be our roadmap to doubling the number of people bicycling in Ithaca and Tompkins County. This project will provide one clear vision and a list of priority projects that will make our community more bike-friendly.
We need your experiences and ideas to inform this project. Keep reading to find out the ways you can help.
About the Blueprint
The Blueprint will address the needs of potential and current cyclists in six improvement areas based on the League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly Communities program:
Engineering, Education, Encouragement,
Enforcement, Evaluation, and Equity
By participating in the planning process, you'll help shape our vision for biking in Ithaca and Tompkins County and the 5-year action plan of specific projects to make our community more bike-friendly.
Why Focus on Bikes?
Biking is a solution to many problems in Ithaca and Tompkins County, particularly when it is used for the many short trips (3 miles or less) we make within the urban area of the county.
Bicycling is a low-impact exercise for any age that can be weaved into every day life as you move around town.
Access to Opportunities
Bicycling opens up the city to people of all ages and incomes for trips that are too long to walk but too short for transit to serve well.
To attract and retain talent and tourists, our bicycle amenities must be competitive to other cities such as Buffalo, Burlington, and Syracuse.
Bicycling is space-efficient, so more people biking means more road space and parking for people who need to drive.
Transportation is the second biggest contributor to your carbon footprint; using a bicycle for short trips reduces that.
We want to know what the walking and biking issues are in your neighborhood, so come to our open houses and tell us what you'd like to see.
Action Plan Focus Groups
Focus groups will help define and prioritize specific and feasible projects that will make Ithaca a Silver-level Bike Friendly Community in 5 years.
