Bike Shops

THE BIKE RACK is a bike shop located in Collegetown near Cornell's campus that offers sales and repairs. They offer free bicycle repair classes every 1st and 3rd Thursdays from 6-7 PM.

BOXY BIKES is located in downtown Ithaca's Press Bay Alley and specializes in sales and rentals of e-bikes and cargo bikes. They also do repairs on bicycles of all types.

CAYUGA SKI & CYCLERY is a bike and ski shop that does repairs and sales located in Ithaca's West End not too far from downtown.

MAIN STREET BIKE SHOP is a new shop located in the village of Trumansburg that offers repairs and sales.

OLD GOAT GEAR EXCHANGE is an outdoor sports store near the Ithaca Commons that offers bike repairs, rentals, and used bikes.

THE OUTDOOR STORE is located on the Ithaca Commons and offers sales, repairs, and rentals. Say hi to Riley the Dog for us!

    SWAN CYCLES is a bike shop near Varna (5 miles out of downtown) that also has trails and hosts group rides and cross-country ski jaunts. Call 607-277-0495 for store hours.

    EASTERN MOUNTAIN SPORTS and WALMART also sell bicycles and bike gear, and are located along Ithaca's South Meadow Street.

    BICYCLE RENTALS

    BIG RED BIKES is Cornell University's on-campus bikeshare system that is open to the public. The system is operated by Zagster.

    ITHACA BIKE RENTAL is a seasonal program of the Ithaca Youth Bureau, located in Stewart Park along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail.

    BOXY BIKES, OLD GOAT GEAR EXCHANGE, and THE OUTDOOR STORE are downtown Ithaca bike shops that also offer bike rentals.

    DIY BIKE REPAIR

    RECYCLE ITHACA'S BICYCLES (RIBs), a program of Southside Community Center, is a community bicycle maintenance and repair shop that offers tools and support for people to repair or rebuild their own bikes. They're open Tue & Thu 7-9 PM and Sat 11:30 AM-5 PM.

    THE BIKE RACK offers free bicycle repair classes every 1st and 3rd Thursdays from 6-7 PM at their Collegetown location.

    Community Groups

    BICYCLE PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE (BPAC) is a City of Ithaca committee that meets monthly and advises city staff and Common Council on bicycle and pedestrian planning.

    BICYCLE PEDESTRIAN ADVOCACY GROUP - ITHACA, NY is a Facebook discussion group about bicycle and pedestrian issues.

    BIG RED BIKES is also Cornell's student-led bicycle advocacy group.

    CYCLE CNY is a mountain biking organization for Ithaca, Tompkins County, and the Southern Tier.

    FINGER LAKES CYCLING CLUB (FLCC) has regular recreational rides for people of varying abilities, racing events, organized tours, family rides, and lots of info.

    FINGER LAKES INDEPENDENCE CENTER (FLIC) directly advocates for people using wheelchairs and other adaptive technologies. FLIC's mission is to empower all people with disabilities while creating an inclusive society through the elimination of social and architectural barriers.

    GET YOUR GREENBACK TOMPKINS works collaboratively to help people and organizations take key steps in the areas of food, transportation, waste and building energy that simultaneously reduce our community’s carbon emissions, save money and create a socially just local economy.

    ITHACA YOUTH BUREAU is an agency of the City of Ithaca that provides a broad variety of recreation and youth development programs. They operate the Bike Rodeo at Streets Alive! Ithaca and Ithaca Bike Rental.

    WAY2GO is a program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County that is transforming the culture of transportation among users, providers and decision makers, so that everyone can get where they need to go in a fair and sustainable way.

    Government and uNIVERSITIES

    CITY OF ITHACA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS is the City's arm in charge of streets and the public right-of-way. The Engineering Division has information on the City's Sidewalk Program, the recently launched neighborhood traffic calming program, as well as a request form for traffic signals and signs.

    CORNELL UNIVERSITY TRANSPORTATION & MAIL SERVICES is Cornell's office that handles bicycle registration (NetID required), bus passes, cycling network, and more.

    ITHACA-TOMPKINS COUNTY TRANSPORTATION COUNCIL is our county's metropolitan planning organization (MPO), which is in charge of requesting and distributing federal funding for transportation projects. They also conduct studies and make lots of cool maps!

    The BIKING MAP FOR ITHACA & TOMPKINS COUNTY (PDF) is based on traffic volumes and existing bicycle facilities and published by the Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council. You can pick up a physical copy at our offices inside the Dewitt Mall.

    The ITHACA NEIGHBORHOOD BIKING MAP (PDF) and WALKING MAP are projects of Bike Walk Tompkins and the Human Services Coalition of Tompkins County, respectively. You can pick up copies of these maps at our offices inside the Dewitt Mall.

    ITHACATRAILS.ORG is the one place where you can find and sort through all the walking, biking, running, skiing, horseback, and snowshoeing trails in Tompkins County.

    GOFINGERLAKES.ORG is a website from the Finger Lakes Land Trust that serves as your guide to the best spots for hiking, biking, paddling, and outdoor recreation across their 6,000-square-mile area, which includes Tompkins County.

    GOOGLE MAPS and OPENSTREETMAPS also offer cycling layers and can provide directions optimized to biking and walking.

    Other Transportation Options

    Walking and biking are part of a buffet of transportation options in Ithaca and Tompkins County that help you move in more sustainable way. All transportation options in the county can be found on Way2Go's Transportation Options page. Below are some of our partners.

    ITHACA CARSHARE allows you to borrow vehicles 24/7 and you only pay for the time you borrow it, which makes it easier to live in Ithaca without the cost of owning a car. Ithaca Carshare is also our host organization!

    TOMPKINS CONSOLIDATED AREA TRANSIT (TCAT) is our local public transit system and their buses all have bike racks which carry 17,000 bicycles a year! Take a bike on the bus and defeat the hills.

    GADABOUT is a non-profit, door-to-door transportation service for Tompkins County residents who are aged 60+ and for people with disabilities.
